About this stamp:
In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy pledged that the United States would land a manned spacecraft on the moon "before the decade was out." The name given to this incredible project was "Apollo." On July 16, 1969, after a series of preparatory Apollo missions, Apollo 11 broke the gravitational bonds of the Earth and set out into space to accomplish this goal. Manned by Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. Aldrin, and Michael Collins, Apollo 11 successfully repeated the work of past Apollo missions and assumed a lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin then transferred into a lunar module named the Eagle, and on July 20, at 4:18 pm EDT, they landed on the moon.
