About this stamp:
In 1916 a contest was held to select a state flag for Indiana. The winning design was created by artist Paul Hadley of Mooresville. On May 31, 1917, the design was adopted as the state flag of Indiana. On a blue field, the Indiana state flag pictures a flaming torch, symbolizing liberty and enlightenment, and six rays, representing the expansive nature of these ideas. A circle of 13 stars represents the 13 original colonies, while a smaller circle of five stars represents the five states admitted after the formation of the United States. Directly above the torch is a larger star, signifying Indiana as the 19th state.
